Summer Reading Program

• Please help your child find appropriately leveled books to read.
  

  o Remind your child to use the five finger rule. Read approximately 100 words and keep track of each unknown word with a finger. If there are 0-1 fingers (0-1 unknown words) that book is an appropriate level to read without adult help. If there are 2-3 fingers that book would need to be read with some help and if there are 4-5 fingers that book is too hard.

• Keep track of the minutes your child spends reading independently on the enclosed calendars.

• Reading Blogs (this process was practiced by all students during the first week of June)

o A minimum of once a week, log onto www.frlibrary.com and click on the “Summer Reading Program” link and look for a link to add a blog. You will need to enter the title and author of your book and add a comment about your book based on the examples you see. See here for what to include. In addition to creating your own comment weekly you can also respond to other peoples’ comments. (if you have any difficulty please email Sara Schoepke at schoepke@waterford.k12.wi.us)

• Return all three calendars to your child’s Communicative Arts teacher at Open House or on the first day of school. Please make sure the reading minutes are recorded and the calendars are signed by an adult.

Incentives:

• Students that return their calendars in September will participate in a special event.
  

• Students that return their calendars and also blog a minimum of once a week will be eligible for an additional reward.
  

• Students that sign up for the Waterford Public Library and Rochester Public Library “Catch the Reading Bug!” summer program can earn incentives on a weekly basis. The WGSD program and public libraries are working together to promote summer reading.
